Schmitt Industries, Inc. is pleased
to announce that Seagate Technology, Singapore has placed a major order
for the Schmitt TMS-2000RC Surface Measurement Machines. Seagate is implementing
a major expansion in Singapore and has chosen to continue to rely on the
Schmitt laser light scatter measurement tools to control hard drive disk
smoothness/micro-roughness.
Schmitt has worked closely with Seagate for the last five years to enhance
and further develop the proprietary surface measurement capabilities of
the Schmitt TMS-2000RC machines. These machines are used around the clock,
24/7 to assure the disk substrates meet the new industry standards of sub
angstrom measurements.
Currently, the Disk Drive Industry is producing disks with surface roughness/smoothness
of less than one angstrom (0.1 nanometers) which greatly improves the storage
capacity of the disk drives. Schmitt is the leader in creating fast, accurate,
and repeatable measurements below one angstrom in production and research
environments. Schmitt's TMS-2000RC machine is less costly, faster and more
accurate than atomic force microscopes, which are slow to measure and generally
unable to measure below one angstrom.
Wayne Case, President and Chairman of Schmitt said: "These TMS-2000RC
orders will increase our sales in the fourth quarter by over $500,000.
Profits will also increase significantly as a result of these orders. The
Disk Drive markets are growing rapidly because of the huge increase in
demand for data storage. This is driven by a resurgence of the PC markets,
new digital products such as, IPOD, XBOX, Digital Cameras, and increased
government regulations requiring greater data storage. Many of our Disk
Drive customers are increasing purchases of measurement machines and are
upgrading existing Schmitt machines to achieve the industry goal of sub
angstrom surface roughness, which in turn increases data storage per disk.”
