Schmitt Industries designs, manufactures and markets highly precise test, measurement and process control systems for a wide variety of applications.  The Company was founded in 1987 after determining that there was no simple or reliable solution for in-process dynamic balancing of precision grinding machines.  Precision grinding is a necessary step for nearly every manufacturing process.  The Company’s SBS dynamic balancing systems can detect and dynamically correct vibration as low as 0.02 microns to ensure product quality and SBS acoustic emission sensors can help grinding machine operators maximize the efficiency of the grinding process, thereby increasing part throughput and lowering operating costs.

 

In the mid 1990's the Company expanded its product focus to include laser-based surface microroughness measurement for ultra-smooth surfaces such as silicon wafers, hard disks and mirrors. The Company also offers surface measurement services in its CASI Measurement Lab. Our products provide fast and repeatable non-contact surface measurements to less than 0.5 angstroms, a level unachievable by competing technologies. These products and service capabilities have become the basis of the SMS business.

 

The Company’s family of products continued to grow in the early 2000's with the acquisition of the Acuity� line of dimensional and distance measurement lasers These laser products utilize both triangulation and time-of-flight measurement principles and are known for their speed and accuracy. The Acuity products are used in a wide variety of industrial, commercial and research applications.

 

In 2007, the Company purchased Xact� ultrasonic measurement technology for the remote monitoring of the fill levels of industrial propane tanks. The Xact system sends a "ping" through the tank wall and then detects the echo. This time-of-flight data, along with other information such as tank size and configuration, is used to calculate the fill level and that data is transmitted by satellite to a secure website for display. Typical users are bulk propane suppliers and large end-users.

 

In 2009, Schmitt Industries acquired Optical Dimensions®, a manufacturer of the Lasercheck® line of roughness gauges. Lasercheck® is a unique Ra laser based non-contact roughness monitor incorporating patented “laser light scatter� technology that can make precise and repeatable surface roughness measurements in the 0.01 to 10 micron range.  Lasercheck® provides high speed in-process measurements in a fraction of a second and is optimized for surface measurements of ground, sanded, polished, honed, super-finished and shot blasted surfaces.

	Remote Tank Monitoring The Company’s remote tank monitoring solution, called Xact�, utilizes ultrasonic technology to detect and measure the fill levels of storage tanks of liquefied gases such as Propane.
